ABOUT ABOUT

Co-created by Nicole Marquez and Julie Turner, performed by Nicole Marquez

Nicole Marquez is a dancer, an advocate and a survivor of brain and spinal injuries. Approximately 15 years ago, she relocated to New York with the aspiration of pursuing a career in dance on Broadway. However, her dreams were momentarily deferred following an accident that nearly claimed her life—an incident where she fell six stories from the roof of her apartment building. Her performance, The Mask of Joy, tells the story of how in the wake of this harrowing experience, Nicole not only survived but is actively demonstrating that while life may present formidable challenges, it is unequivocally possible to embark on a new chapter and lead a gratifying life, irrespective of the disabilities one may confront. The Mask of Joy uses a mix of spoken words and movement to invite audiences to reshape their cognitive perspectives on perseverance and personal encouragement.

MB Presents is a multi-disciplinary presenting and residency program that produces performances, workshops, films and programs by local, regional, national and international artists.
